From here.
whodrankastar:
Holw craned his hand and seemed to trust on his finger when it touched the backs of the books, hoping to let him know to stop at the exact title. It stopped in a black and burgundy spine, and he took it with other books. “Come here, Calcifer”, says the magician as he walks and opens one of his books in half-page, looking with his crystal eyes.
“Howl”, said the fire demon with intent to make him lose concentration, but he didn’t. Howl continued looking inside the book. The young man sat on the stone wall of the highlights of the castle windows—now remodeled. He closed the book without saying a word and took another volume with the purpose to repeat the action, reading. A couple of them were ordained by sight.
never-been-beautiful:
Sophie had just come back from grocery shopping in Porthaven. It was a bit late, but that’s when the food was still good and on sale. She put the bags away on the table and looked around. It wasn’t too dirty, but the books and papers Howl and Micheal had were spread out on the floor and various places. “You seems busy.” She walked over and stood beside him, looking at the stacks of books around him.
whodrankastar:
The voice of Calcifer tormenting Howl’s ear was not enough to remove him from his book, but Sophie’s voice did. He raised his face and smiled at the newcomer gir. “I am”, he admitted, turning his head to see the stack of books next to him. “Calcifer also does not help me to concentrate. It has not been silent for a moment since you left, Sophie, how delirious!”
never-been-beautiful:
“I’m sorry. But we needed food.” She gave him an apologetic smile and moved the stack of books over and sat beside him. “You haven’t stopped reading since I left, though. What is that, anyways?” She asked, trying to understand the pictures and writings on the page.
whodrankastar:
“Did Michael wasn’t with you?”, Howl asked with great interest. “You’re always together shopping, is unusual”. Said that, the wizard looked down at the volume again, his eyes going so fast that, indeed, he wouldn’t be reading. He felt when she pulled away the books, but he said nothing, even he don’t looked at her. By the time he noticed that she was sticking out from between the pages, he closed automatically a little bit the book. “Mrs. Nosy!”, Howl said, “why do you want to know?”
never-been-beautiful:
She shook her head, still trying to figure out the book. “I think he went to visit Martha.” She backed up a bit and made a face at the nickname he usually gave her. “I’m just curious. It’s interesting.”
whodrankastar:
As she looked closer to the book to try to see, he closed a little longer the page. “What? Does everyone but me out for a walk? Is that fair? The only thing I do is work and work hard for us to live comfortably… And you guys not even let me know where you go?” Howl closed his eyes theatrically with too much drama. It was normal on him, and perhaps natural. He shook his head a few times, ignoring the fact that Sophie still wanted to know what he was reading. “I can’t believe it…”
never-been-beautiful:
“You don’t have to stay inside all the time. Maybe you can go grocery shopping next time, if you want to complain so much.” She stood up and walked over to the table where she put the bags, and began putting the food away.
whodrankastar:
He could not believe it. Was the only one to sacrifice? Everyone was so unfair to him. Howl opened his eyes and watched as Sophie walked away. With the same dissatisfied tone, he added: “That too? Doing spells and shopping? You guys are exploding me!”
never-been-beautiful:
“Micheal has worked very hard on his spells, lately. It won’t kill you to work a bit harder for once. And it was only a suggestion.” She gave him a sarcastic look and went over to sit beside him again when she was done.
whodrankastar:
«For once», thought the magician as he drew the more miserable expression he had. At least they had to admit that he did the most work, right? Howl no answered, simulating to be offended. He put his nose again in the book, pretending to read it.
never-been-beautiful:
She sighed and watched him for a moment. “Are you not going to talk to me over a few words? What a dumb reason.” She snorted and crossed her arms across her chest.
whodrankastar:
And he did, because the eyes of Howl remained fixed on the paper. “This is not…”, he whispered to himself, closing the book and looked up to her. “What? Are you hoping to snoop in my books?”
never-been-beautiful:
“I was just curious. Are you hiding something and afraid that I’ll find it?” She glared at the stack of books beside her and then back at him.
whodrankastar:
“Let me tell you, my dear, I have nothing to hide,” He shrugged his shoulder vehemently. “Go ahead, you can see”, he said as he stretched the book he had just taken, toward her.
never-been-beautiful:
She took the book stubbornly and looked through the pages. “I have no idea what is says. Will you tell me?” She handed it back to him, knowing that he didn’t really like answering questions, but hoped anyway.
whodrankastar:
He waited patiently because he knew very well that she would not understand anything. Not that he really wanted to say her, after all, he never liked to answer questions. He took the book only to leave it in the cluster behind her. After that, still silent, showed her the title of the next book he would take. A large letters that read “Alchemy” in red on the cover golden explained everything.
never-been-beautiful:
“That wasn’t a very hard question at all.” She said, crossing her arms again. Sometimes he could be a real pain. “It was a simple question.” She looked at the other books which had similar titles in the same font and picked the top one up, examining it. “When do you plan on actually teaching Micheal something instead of giving him simple spells to work on?”
whodrankastar:
“I don’t tell you what it is and you get annoying,” he said with resignation, “I’m telling you, and you anyways get annoying”, protested, but he chose to respond this time. After all, it was difficult to remove over Sophie and her curiosity. Howl opened the book and looked down, responding slowly because he was reading. “Michael is well with those spells, are you his spokesperson?”
never-been-beautiful:
She really didn’t know what to say. He just called me annoying! She thought, but she really couldn’t complain, he was no better. “Well he really isn’t learning anything new. He can’t become better if he only sticks to the spells he already knows.” She huffed and replied snidely, “We all can’t be great wizards like you so easily.”
whodrankastar:
“Maybe you’re right.” He agreed thoughtfully and lowered his hands, but the book did not go down with him. On the contrary, the book is kept floating in front and he slipped away from where he was sitting, walking to the table where Michael usually practiced his spells. Howl took the last paper I’d left him and watched him as he walked once more to Sophie. “I’ve been busy looking for these books and I’ll be busy later…”
never-been-beautiful:
“Busy doing what?” she asked accusingly. “What could possibly be more important than teaching your apprentice?” She thought he was probably going to practice a spell in which to enhance his charm, or maybe to alter his appearance even more. Not that he needed it, after all.
whodrankastar:
“Things.” He answered evasively, as always. He raised the hand to take the book which it was floating, and he left it where he was sitting. He began to seek a pen to write. “Where I left it…”
never-been-beautiful:
“You’re not going out to meet someone, are you? Or get drunk again?” She asked a bit worriedly, but tried her best to hide that tone.
whodrankastar:
“Drunk?”, he asked with a high voice elevation, “outrageous! As I told you once, I am cone sold sober.” And although this was not entirely true, he raised his chin slightly, showing arrogance. It’s not like he was going to be busy doing a enchanted gem, of course not. “If you noticed, I’m in the process of being in quicksand. Alchemy is not my thing and I need concentration.”
never-been-beautiful:
“Howl, I’m not ignorant.” she answered accusingly. He went out almost every other night and didn’t come back until late, usually some sort of tipsy. “And why do you need to know how to make quicksand? That’s just a bit odd.”
“Of course you’re not.” He agreed with her. After all, Sophie was not ignorant or silly, and she realized things too fast, even for him. She didn’t miss anything. “I don’t want to create a quicksand”, he said, “I mean I don’t know what I’m getting into because I’ve never practiced alchemy. Do you know how expensive it is? You have to buy many things.”
